Re: Healing Request
There are herbs which can be taken medicinally for migraines. They have to be taken daily for the purpose of reducing the frequency and severity of migraines. The first one I learned of is feverfew. Then I heard that cayenne may be more effective. Then I read about butterbur, which has to be bought commercially because there is a way to prepare it which causes it to not be toxic. Then there is turmeric. Turmeric is one of the main ingredients in curry, and this causes curry to have that bright yellow color. Turmeric reduces inflammation, which has a tendency to make pain worse.
The two prescription drugs for the same purpose are propranolol XR and topiramate. The drug propranolol has positive side effects and tends to be cheaper than topiramate, and topiramate has negative side effects. Everyone is different though, and maybe some people do better with topiramate. Maybe some people do better taking both.
Another thing is that often migraines are triggered by foods, so it is common to ask people who get migraines to write down everything they eat or drink for a few months, and to write down when they get both regular headaches and migraines. Then when enough data has been collected it is possible to decide if a food or drink is likely to be a trigger for migraines. Sometimes it is the way a food is prepared. Aged cheeses trigger migraines more often than cheeses which are not aged. Fresh refried beans are safe but if they are made the day before they can be a trigger. MSG and chemical artificial sweeteners like Nutrasweet can trigger migraines. Chocolate and coffee can be a problem, because of caffeine - or for some people not getting enough caffeine can be a trigger. Garlic and onions can be a trigger because of the sulfer content - eggs, too. Red wine can be a trigger. If you search for migraine and diet online you can find common food and drink items which are most likely to trigger migraines.
It is becoming increasingly common to not tolerate wheat. I think that is really strange. The symptoms are not immediate, but as it is so common in foods, people who have propblems tolerating wheat end up having constant low level symptoms and they don't know why. They keep eating bread and noodles and other things containing wheat so they always have symptoms which can't really be traced to their source.
Same thing with dairy. Even people who are not lactose intolerant are having problems with milk.
